Visitors & Capping

Guests are always welcome at Chula Homa. Here is everything you need to arrange a wonderful first day in the hunt field.

The Cap

What It Costs & How It Works

To “cap” means to hunt as a guest for the day. Our capping fee is $75 per rider, payable to the field secretary at the meet, and it includes the hunt breakfast that follows. Juniors (under 18) cap at $25.

All visitors must arrange the day in advance so we can welcome you properly, confirm the fixture, and pair you with a member of the field. Reach out at least a week ahead through our contact page.

A current negative Coggins test is required for every horse on our fixtures, and all riders must sign the hunt's standard liability release.

Turnout

What to Wear

Because of our warm Mississippi climate, Chula Homa keeps two hunt seasons with three forms of dress — cubbing, ratcatcher, and formal. When in doubt, dress conservatively and ask your host.

Cubbing

Early in the season, while it is still warm and humid, dress is light: a light-colored polo shirt, buff breeches, belt, boots or chaps, and a properly fitted hunt cap. Hunt staff may wear a red polo.

Ratcatcher

As the young hounds are introduced to the hunt, ratcatcher is correct: a tweed coat and vest, a tie or stock tie with pin, belt, tan or buff breeches, and black or brown tall boots or chaps.

Formal

Our formal season opens with the Opening Hunt in early November: a black coat, buff or tan breeches, black boots, and a white shirt with a stock tie and plain gold pin. Staff wear the traditional “pinque” (scarlet) coat.

Safety first. A modern, properly harnessed equestrian helmet is required for all riders on every fixture, regardless of the customs of dress. A back protector is encouraged.

Etiquette

A Few Field Courtesies

Foxhunting runs on tradition and good manners. None of it is hard — and your host will guide you — but a few customs make the day safe and pleasant for everyone:

New to the words? Our Foxhunting 101 page explains the horn, the flights, and the language of the chase.

Release Forms

Every rider must complete and sign the hunt’s liability release before taking the field. Please download, print, and bring the correct form to the meet, signed in advance.
